You might as well activate the Colors of Madness DLC and avoid the farmstead unless you want to enter/complete it if you don't mind having to be more selective with your missions to avoid a mini-boss.
Overall if you want to start with both DLC's then go ahead and just avoid the farmstead and courtyard. It releases a curse that spreads over your heroes like a virus and can kill them permanently without proper management. If you enter the first courtyard mission and complete it then the game can become a lot harder especially for a beginner. Overall avoiding the farmstead makes no difference, while entering (or completing the first mission, whichever is the case) makes the game mildly harder.Ĭrimson Curse makes the game mildly harder even if you avoid the courtyard because it causes a repetitive town event that's slightly annoying and blocks out good events. Color of Madness doesn't do anything unless you enter the farmstead, at which point (not sure if it's entering or completing it) a very difficult mini-boss is released that you'll want to avoid for a while.
